What you’re getting are called tonsilloliths. Its basically dead cells and food particles that get stuck in the crevaces of your tonsils. Most of the time, they the dead cells and food particles combine with your saliva and you swallow them like you regularly would. But in this case, they’re getting trapped and they’re creating a buildup, thus in turn is food for bacteria, hence the smell (yum!).
I’ve got the same issue, and about the only way to get rid of them is always gargling after you eat. Some people say "Oooh you’ve got to get your tonsils out" but you don’t. Being that you now know the problem, all you’ve got to do is gargle each time you eat. That way the food particles have no chance at sticking in the crypts of your tonsils.
If you’d really like, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsilloliths They show you a pretty picture and everything!!!
Hope this helps, it will get better in a few days, trust me!
Dont smoke
oooh, that is gross. you should see a physician. you may have something on your tonsils. i don’t know.
Get it checked out – its not right!!!
Go see a dentist or a doctor
there is actually a bad breath disease that some people are diagnosed with. Make sure you brush your tounge and teeth and roof of your mouth reguarly. Ask your doctor or dentist b/c you could have this.
see a dentist
The name of the medical condition you describe is halitosis, and it is often caused by build-up of bacteria in the mouth or poor dental hygiene. Brush your teeth and use mouthwash regularly to decrease the amount of bacteria in your mouth.
If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to see a doctor.
use chewing gums
It sounds like allergies (sinus drainage). It can collect in the throat to form any range of solid that triggers you to cough & thus the chunk. If it’s set either in sinus cavities or throat for a while, whatever germs are in it have time to cultivate which is probably that cause of the smell.
I can’t think of anything else that would cause regular coughing up chunks. I’d try allergy medication for drainage. Also, the Crest Pro-Health mouthwash, FOLLOWED by Crest Pro-Health toothbrushing (make sure to get every knook & cranny incl. cheeks, back of throat, under tongue) will help tons. If need be, my dentist recommended BreathRx (now in stores) which REALLY kills bacteria & helps too! We do the Crest regime here and my hubbie is tons better (yes, he has BB from Gingivitis). Good luck!
Although sometimes it seems like a hassle just to see a doctor, I think you should. It’s not normal, and you don’t want a problem like this to persist.
Halitosis is not a disease it is a term used to describe a symptom of an underlying condition. Most of the time it is related to oral hygeine but it can also be due to sinusitis (sinus irritation or infection) or another respiratory condition. See source #1
I would advise you to begin a regimne of saline nasal spray. You can find this in the pharmacy isle of any WalMart or Target type store or ask your local pharmacist. Generic is the same as any brand name so save some cash. Two good squirts per nostril FOUR times a day with the fourth and last time being just before you go to bed and then gargle with salt water (mix 1/4 teaspoon salt with approx. 30 ml – 45 ml (2 – 3 tablespoons ) of water.
If you have had a history of problems with tonsillitis or a really bad sore throat recently it could be tonsillitis. You should go see a physician to have him/her take a look at your throat and perform a rapid strep test.
If this does not begin to clear up after 3 days of the above regimine then try a decongestant cough syrup and drink PLENTY of water. Of course, if you are on other prescriptions make sure your medications are compatible with this over the counter medication first by asking your physician or reading the medication label / box.
You didn’t state if you felt feverish or not. I would recommend you take your temperature with a good digital thermometer. You can purchase these for around 7 bucks.
If you have a resting temperature (1/2 hour from any food, drink, or extensive physical exertion) of 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit (see source # 3 for conversion to Celcius) or greater I would advise that you go to a clinic or call your physician (family practice or internist). With a temperature / fever and fatigue it could either be bronchitis or a touch of pneumonia.
If you are started on a course of antibiotics, through away your old toothbrush and replace with a new one after 72 hours of treatment.
Best of luck to you.
you should brush your tongue and teeth regularly!!!!!and visit your dentist…
Hopefully this will help you deal with the Tonsilloliths on your own but, if this does not work see an ENT. Ear Nose and Throat Doctor.
