How do you get rid of your Dogs bad breath?

my dog has a VERY bad case of halitosis. we have tried baking soda brushes, mint bones (he hates them), and mouth washes… any idea on how to get his breath to quit being so funky? I love the pup, but geesh ever time he gest excited… WHEW would knock a blow fly off a pile of shit..

Bad breath is a symptom of something deeper, not a diagnosis in and of itself. Generally speaking, bad breath is caused either by kidney trouble and/or gingivitis (very common). If you are feeding kibble or canned food, chances are extremely good that your dog’s bad breath is coming from your feeding a diet that is high in carbohydrate.
Carbohydrates are not natural to a dog’s diet. They stick to the teeth, they cause gingivitis and the result is horrible breath. All the mints in the world are not going to solve your problem.
The first place to start is at your vet’s office. It’s a prudent move to run a CBC and Chem Panel to check organ function. Assuming everything is okay, then it’s time for a dental cleaning. This must be done under anesthesia and it’s important to do it this way because it’s necessary for your vet to look into every nook and cranny to make positively sure that there are no dental abscesses which too could be causing the foul smell. Your vet Should take x-rays. If your vet does not take x-rays (ask first!) then don’t even waste your time – go to another vet. I can’t tell you how many times a dog has had a broken tooth that went undiagnosed because a vet didn’t take dental x-rays.
Once the mouth has been cleaned and you are sure there are no underlying dental problems, then it’s time to change the diet to one that is very low in carbohydrate. Whether you choose to move into raw food or you choose a commercial food, just pick one that is very low in carbohydrate.
Commit yourself to brushing your dog’s teeth as much as you reasonably can and then provide your dog with SAFE chew treats on a daily basis. This can be dried tendons (www.k9rawdiet.com), they can be a kong, they can be a raw bone that you purchase from your supermarket. Choose safe chew items to keep those teeth clean!
Dogs should NOT have bad breath. Their breath should not smell whatsoever and if the breath is indeed bad, then something is very wrong.

my bets advice would be just keep trying different mint snacks. they actually have one now that are meant to look and taste like andes chocolate mints. my dogs love them. besides this talk to ur vet.
he has terrible bad breath because his teeth are covered with plaque, and tarter, make an appointment with your vet and have a dental on your dog, this will make his breath fresh again, and keep chewy’s down for him at all times and brush his teeth as well
You can brush their teeth. A couple months ago, I went to target and got a pack of doggie toothpaste and 2 toothbrushes. If he doesn’t like the bones, you can try giving him the mint treats. I gave sum to my pup and he loved them!!

Baking soda and mouth wash can cause severe problems with your dogs stomach lining and should never be given to a dog. Bad breath in dogs can be caused by various things including gingivitis, periodontitis, abscessed teeth, bone or hair stuck in the mouth, oral ulcerations, foreign bodies in the mouth, tumors in the mouth, lung disease, lung cancer, and kidney disease. Until you know exactly what is causing your dog to have bad breath you are wasting your time and money in trying to treat it. Take the dog into the vet and have him looked at so you know what is causing the bad breath and then how to treat it.
