You get out of your dog what you put into them. The bad breath is coming from the gut. Feed a high quality food with no more then 2 grains listed in the first 5 ingredients.
The cheaper the food, the nastier the breath.
Make sure there are no abscesses and if the teeth are fine but just covered in yuck build up, then feed the dog a soup bone from the grocery store every couple of weeks and this will scrape the teeth clean and provide hours of chewing enjoyment. It is what nature intended. Bones clean teeth.

They make doggy mints that work really well. You could also try bones that help to clean their teeth. The best thing you could do is take your dog to a place like Petsmart and have them clean their teeth so that you don't have to do it. Unfortunately, your dogs breath with never smell like roses, but it could possibly be improved

Maybe it is time for the vet to do a dental cleaning? I put an additive in my dogs water that keeps the breath fresh and plaque down. Lots of differant brands that do this. I can't remember what brand I bought this time.

So try brushing the teeth.. Did you try a better quality dog food?
Or asking the vet to check to see if the dog has a bad tooth?

Actually..ther is dog toothpaste and dogs toothbrushes..that MIGHT work..if not..there isnt anything that can acually get rid of bad breath totally..like humans..we always have somehting funky about our breath! You can try brushing your dogs teeth and if it works totally and gets rid of it...thats a miracle! Its normal for a dog to have bad breath, so I wouldnt be worried..just stay out of his/her face and by his/her mouth!!
there is also breath sprays that might work, or go to your vet to ask, its better coming from a professional! :)
a better dog food might lessen the deadlyness of your dogs breath..lol..im just kidding..it cant be that bad..can it?

Well try getting his teeth cleaned by the vet and then there are treats on the market, available in petstores, that aid in the breath department. They are called doggie mints or breath biscuits. Try not to get plastic type chew toys as they cause digestive problems. Also, try getting digestable rawhide chews, they help with the plaque build up that causes bad breath. As for brushing the teeth, there are toothpastes available for dogs that make it quite easy to brush the teeth without a fight, so it's not so yucky.

If you haven't brushed his teeth, that's exactly what you should do. Brush his teeth with dog toothpaste/toothbrush and see if that doesn't cure the bad breath. You should also check his teeth and gums to make sure there's no plaque/build up and that his teeth and gums are clean. If there is still bad breath, bring him to the vet to check out what the's problem.

Open your dogs mouth and look at the back of his teeth. If there tarter build up there, then it's time to get some dental work done on him. Depending on his age, any dog 4 or older should start getting dental work done at the vets. When tarter builds up, bacteria starts to form and if left untreated the bacteria will work itself into the blood stream.Attacking the heart, brain, lungs and it's not a good sight to experience your animal going through that turmoil. If your dog is under 4 then start brushing his teeth, there's toothbrushes for dogs and cats at your local vets office, they even have toothpaste for pets. Never use human toothpaste on animals.

if your dog has folds in his bottom lip. check those.

bad breath can often mean stomach or intestinal problems.

low quality food will do it.

start feeding him some yogurt every day

have your vet check him for gastro diseases

Most of the time, if a dog has really bad breath...he/she needs to see a vet. Gum disease [requiring deep cleaning] or bad teeth are the cause. Dogs get a tartar build up just like humans if teeth are not cared for.

Freedom is right about the raw bones. I was given some recently and I asked her about how to give them to my Golden's. I gave them each a frozen bone and they loved it. It not only kept them occupied for hours but it also helped clean their teeth. Feeding a high quality dog food is the best thing also to do for your dog.
My Golden's eat Canidae dog food and their breath is great. I also brush their teeth at least 2 times a week.

You gotta brush the teeth. I use a dampcloth/ or dog toothbrush with baking soda on it, and gently clean the tartar off the teeth. The baking soda freshens the breath too. I used it with my stinky mouth rescue pooch who stunk even months after he had his teeth cleaned by a vet, and it totally worked!

Also, raw meaty bones are nature's way for dogs to clean the teeth.

You have already been given a lot of good answers. Just wanted to add alittle more that may help. I have very small dogs and do brush their teeth NOW, after my VET showed me the amount of tarter that had built up in one year. I also took in a stray (also tiny) that needed 5 teeth pulled-no more bad breath.
Because they have small mouths-I found some "child size" toothbrushes with a bent head 5/$1.00 at a discount store that are doing the job perfectly with some baking soda. (You don't have to make them rinse or gargle) After the first time, they seem enjoy it.
If you feed canned food, try to avoid "in gravy" or "in sauce" varieties-it's like glue and sticks to their hair around their mouth as well as inside on teeth and gums. Dog food can sour quickly. Have a good quality 'dry' food available and frozen butcher shop bones are great as long as they are too big to swallow whole. Rawhide chews I have avoided as I had one dog almost choke to death on one-probably due to small dog size. It's nice to share, but limit table scrapes. It also adds to digestive and bad breath problems.
Maybe you and your dog will lose his "bad breath" problem.
