You usually cannot smell your own breath except for after you eat something odorous.
Preventatives for halatosis (bad breath) include regular flossing and brushing (making sure you also brush the top side of your tongue!!!).
Gastric reflux also causes bad breath. You may have reflux without knowing it. Reflux can be treated with an antacid.

The holistic revolution and a general wariness towards modern medicine (and perhaps it high costs and relatively invasive nature) forces many sufferers of halitosis to search for a bad breath home cure. This approach is certainly a worthy endeavor and in many cases the bad breath products available in pharmacies do not offer any long-term solution to chronic bad breath. However, for anyone seeking bad breath help in the home cabinets or in old wives’ tales – there may be no need because simple common sense and a better understanding of the condition is often all that is required to eliminate the foul odor coming from the mouth.
Morning breath is something that we all awaken with and it is perfectly natural. Some people may realize that having a dry mouth in the morning seems to make the bad breath worse, but few understand why. The truth is that a dry mouth is not the actual cause of bad breath but it plays a very big part in its development. This is because saliva provides natural bad breath prevention and any time that salivation levels decrease or drop – you are at greater risk for awakening to halitosis. When we sleep, the body decreases salivation rates and this is why bad breath is so common in the morning—but why?
There are literally hundreds of different types of bacteria living in the mouth. Anaerobic bacteria, those that thrive in low-oxygen environments, are the variety of microorganism that are responsible for bad breath. This is because these bacteria produce waste products known as Volatile Sulfur Compounds which give off the offending odor when they turn into gas and exit the oral cavity while exhaling.
Saliva is the ultimate bad breath natural remedy because of the following:
* Washes away the VSC’s and the food particles that the anaerobic bacteria feed upon
* Is well-oxygenated and thus acts as a natural “birth control” for the anaerobic bacteria. The fewer anaerobic bacteria present in the oral cavity, the fewer VSC’s that are produced
* Is filled with specialized enzymes that aid in the production of antibodies that effectively neutralize existing anaerobic bacteria levels – with fewer bacteria producing waste, there are fewer VSC’s to produce bad breath.
There are three basic bad breath solutions involving saliva. First, drink plenty of water because it will help the saliva control anaerobic bacteria levels by helping to wash away the food particles and VSC’s responsible for bad breath. Water also is vital to the production of saliva to avoiding dehydration is key to any bad breath prevention strategy.
Two, stimulate salivation by chewing. You can accomplish this with sugarless gum or by simply sucking on hard candy or anything similar item.
Third, if you do not want to go to the dentist and have some bad breath detector crammed in your mouth only to be told that bacteria are causing the problem, avoid things that cause dehydration and lower saliva production. Thus, avoid the following:
* Smoking
* Alcohol
* Stimulants (found in laxatives and dietary supplements
* Excessive talking
