You ask a very good question which also shows that you are not familiar with the latest data on bad breath or halitosis (same thing). New information shows that most bad breath comes from the top of the tongue where bacteria grow and produce those bad smells. You can often see this bacteria as "white stuff", especially on the back one-third of the tongue. Most people can not smell their own bad breath so your husband many not know when he has bad breath. For that matter, you can have bad breath to him without you knowing it.
So, after you brush your teeth, clean your tongue. I use OraBrush tongue cleaner because it is designed to clean the back of the tongue. After propler cleaning it will eliminate bad breath for up to 12 hours. Mints and gum just cover up bad breath because they do not get rid of the bacteria, just like perfume covers up body odor because it does not get rid of the cause of body odor. Go to http://www.orabrush.com to see a video on how to tell if you have bad breath.

Make sure he also flosses and uses a tongue scraper. It won't hurt to throw some Listerine Anti-septic in there, too. Other possibilities include: tonsil stones, postnasal drip, lung infection (I don't think this is likely), stomach ailments.

The most likely cause is dental. I would start with the flossing, scraping and rinsing. If the problem doesn't get better within a week or so, I'd go to the dentist.

Has your husband been to see the dentist regarding his halitosis? Although somewhat rare, chronic bad breath may indicate an underlying health condition, such as diabetes.

Treating bad breath is most successful when the cause has been identified. Have your husband book an appointment to see his dentist. From there, alternative treatments or tests may be recommended.

Good Luck!
