"Sluggish" saliva gives bacteria a chance to feed on peptides and proteins. So actually, one thing that can prevent bad breath IS acidic saliva, because bacteria that causes bad breath prefer alkaline saliva. So sweets may be bad for your teeth in general but good for bad breath because glucose makes saliva more acidic.
