Why do people with bad breath breathe out of their mouths?

I’m back in college after winter break and keep getting stuck next to people with bad breath. They suck in a lot of air through their nose and release it in a whistle out their mouths, and then I’m overwhelmed. Why can’t they just breathe through their noses?

There are pleanty of people with bad breath that breath more softly, but the ones who breath heavily are more noticable. Also, just as many breath hard that have good breath, but, not being smelled, they aren’t noticable.
