Why does my dogs breath smell bad?

My basset hound has really bad breath. I know that all dogs have bad breath but this is worse. I think he might have gum disease or a bad tooth. His gums aren’t inflamed and there doesn’t seem to be a rotten tooth, but this has been going on for quite a while now.
Any ideas out there of what could be giving my dog such acrid breath?
I appreciate your help. Thank you!

Since you believe it’s more than just bad breath, it’s time to take your dog to the vet this week and let the vet check for infections or abscesses.
We can’t give you the good advice your vet can because we cannot smell the dog’s breath, and often, a determination can be made by smelling the odor and palpating the gum lines. -!-
sounds like your dog needs it’s teeth clean and checked by a Vet to make sure it hasn’t got any other health problems
Go to a Vet. I think your dog is fine but go to a vet to be safe.
The smell of a dogs mouth can be pretty stinky. It’s usually because we don’t brush them daily and they lick and chew on everything and bacteria just smells bad.
If you raise her lips and look, the teeth should be white everywhere and the gum line should look healthy like ours.
If there are brown spots, thick tarter, pockets of gums that droop or even pus, then she has serious teeth decay and a dental cleaning woul help not only with smell but in the heatlh department as well. One of the leading causes of heart disease, pneumonia, and kidney/bladder infections is the bacteria from the mouths of these rotten teeth dogs.
Aside from this, things that they eat can cause the smell. Little dogs often steal cat poop treats and this can cause stinky breath.
If she licks around her bottom, she could be licking her anal glands (produce a foul substance when the dog poops) and then the secretions from the anal glands get on the mouth and this really smells bad. If you suspect this, your vet or a groomer can express the glands and help with this.
Lastly, when there are internal changes like kidney disease and diabetes, that changes the smell of their breath.
I hope this helps!
Take him for a dental exam as soon as you can. Bad breath can be the first easily recognizable sign of tooth decay which can be very serious. Don’t delay…
i would go to a vet
Um, you’re supposed to wash your dog’s teeth, you know that?
Clean his teeth! My chihuahua has really bad breath and we would clean her teeth once a week but it wasnt enough, we have to brush her teeth 3 times a week, the more often you do it the healthier his teeth will be!
Some animals have a higher acid content in their saliva. The acid makes the teeth and gum tissue decay more rapidly, ergo the unpleasant smell. Take your dog to the vet to get some good toothpaste that will help treat this. Good luck.
Take him to vet. He might have a lot of plaque build up, or a tooth infection. This can be very dangerous because a tooth infection can damage your dog’s heart and shorten his life-span significantly.
it is a dog. where do you think the term "dogs breath" come from
all dogs are gross cats too.
All dogs breath smell bad but its ok for his to be stinkyer.
He obviously needs to go to the vet for a dental.
That means scraping the tartar off his teeth (bet there is brown build up on his back teeth at least) and doing whatever is needed.
BRUSH HIS TEETH!!!!! Duh!
It does seem that he needs his teeth cleaned.
Go to your local vet and make an appointment.
Afterward brush his teeth at lest twice a week.
You can buy special doggy tooth paste and brushes at your pet store or vet.
Give him dental chews regularly to help maintain his teeth.
Hope this helped!
It could be that your dog may have a bad tooth that you can’t see. Or an infection in a tooth or the gums can cause bad breath. If your dog has trouble eating or chewing, that’s a sign of a bad tooth or infection. Also, tartar can get on a dogs teeth over time and cause bad breath. Or even some dog foods, especially canned dog food can cause your dog to have bad breath. The next time you take your dog to the vet get them to check his teeth and gums. He may need to get his teeth cleaned by the vet, which should be done once a year anyway. Also, you can get chew bones, like Nylabone dog chew toys, or CET chew sticks, which are edible. They also help with dog breath. When a dog chews on the bones or rope toys, they help keep the tartar off the teeth. Some dog treats also help with bad breath. Just make sure the next time you take your dog to the vet them to check your dogs teeth. Hope I helped.
bad teeth and bad gums a dental cleaning done at teh vets should help
